My target 200000 Steps

I'm stepping up for ICU

Every year, more than 200,000 people are admitted to intensive care units. Behind every one of those numbers is a person, a family, and a story that has been changed forever.

This May, I’m taking on the StepUp4ICU challenge, walking or running 200,000 steps to recognise every one of those patients, and the incredible ICU teams who care for them when it matters most.

Australia and New Zealand have some of the best ICU survival rates in the world. That’s no accident. It’s the result of ongoing investment in research, education, and training. But there is always more to be done to improve outcomes and support recovery after critical illness.

By supporting my challenge, you’re helping fund life-saving research and education. 100% of the funds raised through StepUp4ICU go towards advancing critical care and supporting the next generation of intensive care leaders.

This challenge is more than just steps, it’s about recognising lives, supporting families, and backing the people who stand on the frontlines of critical care every day.

I can’t do this alone. Will you help me reach my goal?

Whether you step up alongside me or support with a donation, your generosity will make a real difference to patients, families, and ICU teams.

Together, we can step up for ICU.

My Updates

ICU Nurse, to ICU patient.

Friday 2nd Oct
In March, I became unbelievably unwell with what I thought was the flu. For a whole week my condition continued to get worse, then early morning in the middle of the week I started to cough frank blood and the stridor began. I went to my GP, unsuspecting that a 3 day journey of becoming the patient was about to begin. Laying in the resus bay in ED at 3pm on a random Wednesday, I had 4 doctors working on me and one of my ICU consultants beginning to prepare for an imminent intubation. Looking back and reflecting on this now, it will always be one of the scariest moments of my life. I imagined all the patients before me, alone, scared, crowded around by nurses and doctors, having no idea what was happening and no clue if they were going to survive. I knew this was going to change me for the rest of my life; but also give me the most unique perspective to be able to give back into my practice. Luckily, I was okay. I was in the hands of the greatest people and my own colleagues, which I trusted completely. Without them, I have absolutely no clue what would have happened to me, but I escaped having to be intubated and slowly but surely recovered over the past 6 months. There have been some setbacks, some hurdles and ultimately some more challenges down the road, but as soon as I heard about this challenge, I knew completely my heart was in it. Not only for me; but for the patients that myself and my colleagues tirelessly care for, give their all to, and sometimes go home with empty tanks because of, but can go home knowing that they have touched peoples’ lives for the better. I am so excited to be able to give this month of October to committing to more research and support for the Intensive Care Foundation, and even more grateful for the opportunity. 🤍
